The Truth About Supplements: What Works & What’s a Waste

If you walk into any supplement store or scroll through fitness Instagram, you’ll be bombarded with flashy tubs promising explosive muscle growth, instant fat loss, and superhuman recovery. Some look like they’d turn you in Ronnie Coleman overnight, or that you’d step on stage at the end of a tub. The harsh reality is that the fitness industry thrives on making you believe that the secret to your dream physique is just one tub of powder away. Have this powder and you get the physique of your dreams, they say.

Let’s be brutally honest: most of it is expensive garbage.

Strider Training Systems (STS) is about radical transparency. We want to save you money and frustration by cutting through the marketing noise. Here is the undeniable truth about when supplements actually matter, along with our definitive tier list of what to buy and what to leave on the shelf.

The Golden Rule: When Supplements Actually Matter

Before we talk about pills and powders, we need to talk about the foundation.

Supplements are exactly that; supplementary. They are meant to fill small gaps in an already solid routine. If you are sleeping four hours a night, eating a diet of mostly processed junk, and training inconsistently, no supplement on earth will save you.

Supplements only start moving the needle when you have nailed the basics:

  1. Consistent Training: You are following a structured program (like STS) and progressively overloading.
  2. Adequate Nutrition: You are eating enough total calories and hitting your basic macronutrient targets.
  3. Recovery: You are prioritizing sleep and managing stress.

Once those are locked in, a targeted supplement protocol can give you that extra 5-10% edge. To cover all those tiny blind spots that come in the way of being fully dialled in.

The STS Supplement Tier List

So here’s how we categorize the thousands of products on the market into what actually works, what might work, and what is a complete waste of your hard earned money.

Tier 1: The Essentials (High ROI)

  • Creatine Monohydrate: The most researched sports supplement in history. It safely increases strength, power output, and muscle volume. Forget the fancy, expensive versions - just basic creatine monohydrate is all you need.
  • Protein Powder: Not a magic muscle builder, but simply a highly convenient, cost-effective food source. Hitting your daily protein target is tough, and a scoop of protein makes it significantly easier.
  • Vitamin D3: Especially critical in India. Despite living in a sunny country, the vast majority of Indians are severely deficient due to indoor office jobs and darker skin. Crucial for bone health, immune function, and optimal testosterone levels.

Tier 2: The Optionals (Situational)

  • Omega-3 (Fish Oil): Incredible for joint health, brain function, and reducing inflammation. Recommended if you don't eat fatty fish 2-3 times a week.
  • Magnesium: Can be a game-changer for reducing muscle cramps, lowering stress, and dramatically improving sleep quality.

Tier 3: Waste of Money (The Hype)

  • BCAAs: If you are eating enough total protein, you are already getting all the BCAAs you need. Inside-workout drinking is just expensive flavored water.
  • Fat Burners: Legal, effective fat burners do not exist. Mostly overpriced caffeine pills that do nothing to actual body fat.
  • Testosterone Boosters: Most herbal blends do absolutely nothing to raise your bioavailable testosterone significantly.

The Cost-Effective Stack for Indians

The Indian diet is notoriously carb-heavy and often protein-deficient. A smart, budget-friendly stack looks like this:

  1. Raw Whey Protein Concentrate: (₹1,800 - ₹2,500/month) Buy unflavored, raw whey from trusted Indian manufacturers.
  2. Creatine Monohydrate: (₹500 - ₹800/month) 3 to 5 grams a day. It’s cheap, effective, and lasts forever.
  3. Vitamin D3 (60,000 IU): (₹150 - ₹300/month) Taken once a week.

Total Cost: Roughly ₹2,500 - ₹3,500 a month. That is all you need to maximize your training.

Stop Funding the Hype

The supplement industry wants you confused and insecure. Don't fall for it. Invest where it matters: training, food, and sleep.
